Road freight between Iran and China

From factory to the agreed destination: define the transit corridor, full or part truckload service and cargo-handling arrangements.

Before selecting a service

What exactly does "direct transportation" mean?

Cargo can be collected from a factory or warehouse in China and reach Iran via Central Asia; the reverse direction can also be assessed for exports. Road transport offers origin and destination flexibility, but 'direct service' alone does not establish whether the same tractor or trailer continues throughout.

Only the tractor may change while cargo remains in the sealed trailer; another service may unload and reload the goods one or more times. Therefore, The number of movements of the product itself, its location and the starting point of the declared time It should be clear in the shipping offer.

01 / Choose a corridor

Two main corridors through Central Asia

Both corridors reach Turkmenistan and then Iran; they differ in the Chinese exit gateway and routing between China and Uzbekistan. Map lines are schematic and do not indicate an exact road alignment or confirmed service.

Route 01 / Via Kazakhstan

Khorgos or Alashankou

China ↔ Kazakhstan ↔ Uzbekistan ↔ Turkmenistan ↔ Sarakhs ↔ Iran

For cargo from different parts of China, include inland transport to the western gateway.
Route 02 / Via Kyrgyzstan

Wuqia or Irkeshtam

China ↔ Kyrgyzstan ↔ Uzbekistan ↔ Turkmenistan ↔ Sarakhs ↔ Iran

May suit some western Chinese origins near Kashgar; this corridor does not enter Kazakhstan.

'China to Iran' is not enough

Shanghai, Yiwu, Shenzhen and Guangzhou are different distances from western Chinese gateways. Origin and destination cities, weight and volume, commodity, FTL or LTL service, seal arrangements and the final Iranian customs office all affect rate and lead time.

How does TIR help ground transportation?

Road freight between Iran and China crosses several countries. Many services operate under the TIR customs transit system with sealed cargo, avoiding import clearance in each transit country. TIR does not remove border controls: each customs authority may inspect documents, seals, weight or cargo.

Confirm TIR operation, vehicle permits and use of the selected gateway with the operator before booking. These affect timing, rates and the number of stops.

02 / Route Guide

Does the same truck come from China to Iran?

'Direct transport' does not always mean one tractor travels from the Chinese factory to the Iranian destination. There are three operational arrangements:

  1. The same vehicle and trailer cover most of the route, with cargo remaining in the trailer.
  2. The tractor changes at the border while the same sealed trailer continues; the goods are not unloaded.
  3. Cargo moves from one vehicle to another. This is transloading; the number and location of transfers must be clear from the outset.

All three arrangements may apply at the China–Kazakhstan border, depending on the service. Some networks use Bukhara in Uzbekistan for vehicle changes or cargo transfers; the Wuqia corridor may involve transfers at Osh or Bukhara. There is no rule requiring cargo to be unloaded at every border. At Sarakhs, a sealed trailer may also continue under transit to the destination customs office in Iran if permits and vehicle arrangements allow.

For machinery, sensitive components and valuable cargo, compare the number of cargo transfers alongside price. A tractor change is not the same as unloading and reloading goods. For transport terminology, Cross-stuffing, transshipment and direct services for further reading.

How long does China–Iran road freight take?

Lead time depends on the origin city, Chinese exit gateway, selected route, service type and border conditions. The ranges below are for initial planning only:

originEstimated lead time to Tehran
Western China / Khorgos12–18 days
Evo15–22 days
Shanghai15–25 days
Shenzhen / Guangzhou17–25 days
Wuqia21–23 days on some services
Eastern China via Wuqia24–30 days

Do not equate Khorgos–Tehran timing with Shanghai factory–Tehran timing: inland transport in China must be included. Border congestion, weather, customs inspections and cargo transfers can also extend the actual lead time. Ask whether the clock starts at the factory or at the western Chinese hub or gateway.

Exports from Iran to China

The same corridors can be assessed in reverse. For example, cargo can travel from Tehran to Sarakhs, then through Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan or Kyrgyzstan to China. The final city matters: Urumqi and Kashgar differ substantially from Shanghai, Ningbo or Guangzhou in inland distance.

For initial export planning from Tehran, western China may take around 12–18 days, central China 15–22 days and eastern China 18–25 days. Reconfirm these figures against destination city, gateway, permits and the operator's schedule.

Iranian entry border and destination customs office

For imports, Entry border from Destination customs office separately. Entry at Sarakhs or, for some services, Incheh Borun does not necessarily mean clearance there. Sealed cargo may continue to West Tehran customs or Aprin dry port for clearance.

FTL or LTL; Which one is right for your load?

FTL dedicates a full truck to one shipment and may offer more control over routing and handling for machinery, industrial equipment, bulky or handling-sensitive cargo. LTL combines several shipments in one vehicle and can suit cargo that does not fill a truck, but adds consolidation and separation time at hubs such as Yiwu, Shanghai, Shenzhen or Guangzhou. The minimum volume considered is 1 CBM; this service is not for postal items or personal parcels.

Production-line components, spare parts, automotive parts, electrical equipment, higher-value raw materials and palletised commercial goods can be assessed for this route. Dangerous goods, dual-use items and export-controlled goods require acceptance and permit checks before booking.

Two examples to clarify the route

Imports: A Shanghai factory plans to send 20 tonnes of industrial components to Tehran. After inland transport in China, cargo enters Kazakhstan at Khorgos, crosses Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, and enters Iran at Sarakhs before proceeding to the destination customs office in Tehran. With a low-handling service, the tractor may change while cargo stays in the same sealed trailer. A 15–25 day range for this example is only an initial estimate.

Exports: A Tehran manufacturer sends cargo through Sarakhs and Central Asia to China. Before departure, confirm final delivery city, HS code, Chinese import requirements and destination customs office. Crossing into China is not the end of the journey.

07 / Route Guide

What should be confirmed before booking?

  1. What are the exact origin and destination cities and the final customs office?
  2. Will the shipment leave China via Khorgos, Alashankou or Wuqia? Which border will it use to enter Iran?
  3. Where and how often will the cargo itself be unloaded and reloaded?
  4. Where will only the tractor change, and will the same sealed trailer continue?
  5. Does the quoted lead time start at the factory or the Chinese hub or gateway?
  6. Does the rate include inland China, transit countries and delivery within Iran?
  7. Is the service FTL or LTL, and how much time is allowed for consolidation?
  8. Have transit permits, cargo acceptance and insurance cover been confirmed for this shipment?

When comparing road with sea or rail, look beyond freight rates or travel time. Actual origin-to-destination lead time, cargo handling count, total cost and border risk determine suitability for your shipment.
